Visit of experts from the Organization of Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) to the City of Scientific Research and Technological Applications

Prof. Dr. Mona Mahmoud Abdel Latif, Director of the City, received a delegation from the OECD experts team, which included Dr. Alan Biak (France), Dr. Kilje Park (South Korea), Dr. Young Sook Yang (South Korea), Dr. Hyunkyung Yen (South Korea), Dr. Andrea Rosalinda Hofer (Germany) and Eng. Sarah Zidane (Egypt) with the aim of learning about the scientific and service activities provided by the city and standing on the Egyptian efforts in supporting innovation activities. This came in the presence of Prof. Dr. Mohamed Rashad Abdel Fattah – Deputy Director of the City for Scientific and Research Affairs and the deans of the city’s research institutes and Prof. Dr. Amr Salah Morsy – CEO of the Technology Innovation Commercialization Office (TICO) and the Entrepreneurship Club (E-Club) and Prof. Dr. Manal Ali Shalaby – Head of the Department of Medical Biotechnology at the city, on sunday, September 8, 2024.

Prof. Dr. Mona Mahmoud Abdel Latif confirmed that the visit came within the framework of the activities of the country program for Egypt in cooperation with the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) within the framework of the National Innovation Policy Review Project, which aims to support national entities in stimulating innovation as a driver for achieving growth and sustainable development, enhancing the role of innovation in achieving national goals, improving the design and implementation of innovation stimulation tools, enhancing governance mechanisms for innovation fields, and achieving the axes of the National Strategy for Science, Technology and Innovation 2030, especially the axis of investment in scientific research and partnership, and also achieving the axes of the National Strategy for Higher Education and Scientific Research, especially the axis of international reference and the axis of entrepreneurship and innovation.

Prof. Dr. Mona Mahmoud Abdel Latif gave a presentation on the city, which included (the decision to establish it, the capabilities of the research city, and its distinguished strategic location in the Borg El Arab area in Alexandria), a presentation on the total number of patents obtained by the city, as well as the city’s classification at the international level and at the level of North Africa and the Middle East in scientific publishing, as well as the protocols and memoranda of understanding that the city conducted with industry, universities, and research centers. This presentation included a set of inquiries that were answered in detail. The deans of the city’s research institutes also reviewed the activities of the institutes, the various departments they include, and the services they provide. The city’s most important achievements were also presented, including marketing contracts for research outputs through researchers as success stories for marketing those research outputs.

Prof. Dr. Mohamed Rashad Abdel Fattah reviewed the role of the city’s central laboratories in serving the industrial community by providing various services and consultations, as well as the role of the experimental farm in the actual application of scientific research.

The city’s role in entrepreneurship and innovation was among the meeting’s topics, as Prof. Dr. Amr Salah Morsy singled out the city’s role in localizing the policy of entrepreneurship and intellectual property rights and spreading the culture of registering patents.

At the end of the visit, the team of experts made a field tour of the semi-industrial production unit “Pilot” at the Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology Research Institute.
