Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology Research Institute

Message From The Director

On behalf of the Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology Research Institute (GEBRI) at the City of Scientific Research and Technological Applications (SRTA-City), I am pleased to welcome you to our website.

Our institute is a pioneering research entity dedicated to advancing the frontiers of science in Egypt in the fields of genomics, molecular biology, genetic engineering, and applied biotechnology in medicine, agriculture, industry, and environmental sustainability. Our mission is not only to generate knowledge but also to transform it into tangible, market-ready solutions that serve national priorities and align with the pillars of Egypt Vision 2030 and the National Strategy for Science, Technology, and Innovation (STI-EGYPT 2030).

We are proud to be a driving force in building a knowledge-based and diversified economy. Our work directly supports national goals to enhance healthcare, ensure food security, foster sustainable industrial development, and protect our environment. In doing so, we contribute to the two fundamental pillars of “Technology and Innovation” and “Digital Transformation”, which are essential to Egypt’s future.

Our capabilities, measured by impact:

  • Research Excellence: Our researchers and associates have authored more than 1,500 peer-reviewed scientific papers between 2000 and 2025, reflecting sustained, high-impact research across diverse biotechnology fields.
  • Industry-Ready Solutions: We leverage cutting-edge metagenomics, enzyme engineering, and nanobiotechnology to develop new antimicrobials, bioremediation agents, and high-value biomolecules for industrial applications.
  • Agricultural Innovation: Our research in plant genomics and microbiome engineering contributes to creating resilient crops and sustainable biofertilizers to address climate change and food security challenges.
  • Medical Advancement: From designing new drug candidates targeting cancer (such as VEGFR-2 and EGFR inhibitors) to developing rapid diagnostic tools and therapeutic nanomaterials, our work is at the forefront of improving public health.
  • Environmental Leadership: We develop biological tools for monitoring and cleaning environmental pollutants, including heavy metals and industrial waste, contributing to Egypt’s goal of achieving an “integrated and sustainable ecosystem.”

The Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology Research Institute is more than just a research institute; it is a national treasure built by Egyptian talent. We actively promote capacity building by training graduate students and providing access to our advanced central laboratories. We are committed to building strong partnerships with the private sector, business associations, government agencies, and other stakeholders to ensure the transfer of our innovations from the laboratory to the market—creating economic value and societal benefit.

Our vision is to be the leading regional center for genetic engineering and biotechnology, where scientific excellence meets real-world problem solving. Today, we invite industry leaders, academic partners, and policymakers to explore partnership opportunities with us.

Together, we can harness the power of biotechnology to build a healthier, more prosperous, and sustainable future for Egypt.
