Scientific cooperation between the City of Scientific Research and Technological Applications and the Malaysian University of Technology

Within the framework of the Scientific Research and Technological Applications City’s role in achieving international scientific cooperation and moving towards localizing modern technologies and techniques, Prof. Dr. Mona Abdel Latif, Director of the City, received Prof. Dr. Hesham El-Anshasy, Professor at the Faculty of Chemical and Energy Engineering and Director of the Institute of Advanced Agricultural and Bioprocess Technologies at the Universiti Teknologi Malaysia and former Assistant Director of the Scientific Research and Technological Applications City for Research Institutes Affairs, on Monday, October 28, in the presence of Prof. Dr. Mohamed Rashad Abdel Fattah, Deputy Director of the City for Scientific and Research Affairs.Prof. Dr. Mona Abdel Latif confirmed that the visit came to discuss ways of joint cooperation between the city and the Malaysian University of Technology, and to coordinate the renewal of the cooperation agreement signed between the city and the university, which aims to conduct joint research with economic and industrial returns through the production of natural products in the fields of agriculture and health, as this comes within the framework of the city implementing its pioneering role in cooperation between research institutions with their international counterparts in accordance with the National Strategy for Science, Technology and Innovation 2030, and also in order to achieve the axes of the National Strategy for Higher Education and Scientific Research of the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research in all specializations and the extent of its ability to contribute to supporting international scientific cooperation as one of the distinguished scientific expertise houses in Egypt.Prof. Dr. Mona Abdel Latif also gave a detailed presentation on the city, its research institutes, ongoing scientific activities and projects, scientific services and prototypes in the city. The visit included an inspection tour of the city’s various laboratories, where Prof. Dr. Hesham El-Anshasy praised the city’s capabilities and laboratory equipment and the expertise and knowledge of the research body members to serve many fields, most notably the agricultural and health fields.

12 researchers from the City of Scientific Research and Technology Applications are included in Stanford University’s list of the top 2% of the most influential scientists worldwide

Prof. Dr. Mona Mahmoud Abdel Latif, Director of the City, announced the inclusion of 12 researchers in the city on Stanford University’s list of the top 2% of the most influential scientists in the world in more than 50 scientific specializations in various scientific fields. The list was published on September 17, 2024. She added that this reflects the city’s efforts to improve the quality of scientific research and international publishing in various scientific fields and the city’s continuation of supporting the members of the Research Authority to increase their knowledge and keep pace with everything new in the performance of their research work, which in turn is reflected in the city’s position in general in local and international classifications of centers, institutes and research bodies. The list included: Prof. Dr. Mohamed Samir Mohi El-Din, Research Professor at the Advanced Technology and New Materials Research Institute, Prof. Dr. Noura Al-Ahmadi Al-Najjar, Research Professor at the Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology Research Institute, Prof. Dr. Al-Badawy Abdel Aziz Kamoun, Research Professor at the Advanced Technology and New Materials Research Institute, and Prof. Dr. Tamer Mahmoud Tamer, Research Professor at the Advanced Technology and New Materials Research Institute as the top 2% of scientists in the world in terms of total scientific production (whole career) and scientific production for this year (single year). It included: Professor Dr. Yasser Refaat Abdel Fattah, Research Professor at the Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology Research Institute and former Deputy Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research for Scientific Research Affairs, as the top 2% of scientists in the world in terms of total scientific production (whole career). It also included: Dr. Ahmed Mohamed Omar, Assistant Research Professor at the Advanced Technology and New Materials Research Institute, Dr. Gomaa Farouk El-Fawal, Assistant Research Professor at the Advanced Technology and New Materials Research Institute, Prof. Mohamed Adel Ali Hassan, Research Professor at the Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology Research Institute, Dr. Marwa Mohamed Abu Saree, Assistant Research Professor at the Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology Research Institute, Prof. Ismail El-Fakharany, Research Professor at the Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology Research Institute, Dr. Ahmed Abdel Khaleq, Assistant Research Professor at the Arid Land Agriculture Research Institute, and Dr. Hesham Ali Hamad, Researcher at the Advanced Technology and New Materials Research Institute, as the best 2% of scientists in the world in terms of total scientific production this year (single year).It is worth noting that this classification is based on a set of factors related to the number of citations, the participation factor in scientific papers, the (h-index), and participation in reviewing and editing scientific research in international journals, according to the information published on the (Scopus) website for researchers, which is supervised by the international publishing house (Elsevier). The classification is on two levels: the first is based on the researchers’ career path throughout the work period (whole career-long data), and the second is at the level of a calendar year (single year).

Visit of experts from the Organization of Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) to the City of Scientific Research and Technological Applications

Prof. Dr. Mona Mahmoud Abdel Latif, Director of the City, received a delegation from the OECD experts team, which included Dr. Alan Biak (France), Dr. Kilje Park (South Korea), Dr. Young Sook Yang (South Korea), Dr. Hyunkyung Yen (South Korea), Dr. Andrea Rosalinda Hofer (Germany) and Eng. Sarah Zidane (Egypt) with the aim of learning about the scientific and service activities provided by the city and standing on the Egyptian efforts in supporting innovation activities. This came in the presence of Prof. Dr. Mohamed Rashad Abdel Fattah – Deputy Director of the City for Scientific and Research Affairs and the deans of the city’s research institutes and Prof. Dr. Amr Salah Morsy – CEO of the Technology Innovation Commercialization Office (TICO) and the Entrepreneurship Club (E-Club) and Prof. Dr. Manal Ali Shalaby – Head of the Department of Medical Biotechnology at the city, on sunday, September 8, 2024.Prof. Dr. Mona Mahmoud Abdel Latif confirmed that the visit came within the framework of the activities of the country program for Egypt in cooperation with the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) within the framework of the National Innovation Policy Review Project, which aims to support national entities in stimulating innovation as a driver for achieving growth and sustainable development, enhancing the role of innovation in achieving national goals, improving the design and implementation of innovation stimulation tools, enhancing governance mechanisms for innovation fields, and achieving the axes of the National Strategy for Science, Technology and Innovation 2030, especially the axis of investment in scientific research and partnership, and also achieving the axes of the National Strategy for Higher Education and Scientific Research, especially the axis of international reference and the axis of entrepreneurship and innovation.Prof. Dr. Mona Mahmoud Abdel Latif gave a presentation on the city, which included (the decision to establish it, the capabilities of the research city, and its distinguished strategic location in the Borg El Arab area in Alexandria), a presentation on the total number of patents obtained by the city, as well as the city’s classification at the international level and at the level of North Africa and the Middle East in scientific publishing, as well as the protocols and memoranda of understanding that the city conducted with industry, universities, and research centers. This presentation included a set of inquiries that were answered in detail. The deans of the city’s research institutes also reviewed the activities of the institutes, the various departments they include, and the services they provide. The city’s most important achievements were also presented, including marketing contracts for research outputs through researchers as success stories for marketing those research outputs.Prof. Dr. Mohamed Rashad Abdel Fattah reviewed the role of the city’s central laboratories in serving the industrial community by providing various services and consultations, as well as the role of the experimental farm in the actual application of scientific research.The city’s role in entrepreneurship and innovation was among the meeting’s topics, as Prof. Dr. Amr Salah Morsy singled out the city’s role in localizing the policy of entrepreneurship and intellectual property rights and spreading the culture of registering patents.At the end of the visit, the team of experts made a field tour of the semi-industrial production unit “Pilot” at the Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology Research Institute.

The City of Scientific Research and Technological Applications won first place in the Alexandria region In the Egyptian Entrepreneurship League Competition

Prof. Dr. Mona Mahmoud Abdel Latif, Director of the City, announced the city’s victory in first place in the Egyptian Entrepreneurship League Competition for the year 2024 at the level of the Alexandria region in the final qualifiers of the league, under the auspices of the Academy of Scientific Research and Technology, where the city competed through its Entrepreneurship Club in this competition in two stages, the competition stage between research centers and universities in the Alexandria region at the Alexandria Library on Wednesday, August 14, 2024, with (6) universities, institutes and research bodies, where each of them participated with three projects, and the city qualified with one project for the league final from among (8) projects that were qualified for the final competition, which was held at Badr University on Sunday, August 25, 2024, where a total of (43) projects were arbitrated at the regional level, which are (7) regions at the republic level. Prof. Dr. Mona Mahmoud Abdel Latif stressed that entrepreneurship is one of the most important sectors that contribute to the development of the economy, and that the city’s victory came within the framework of the city’s scientific expertise and material and human capabilities that qualify it to support entrepreneurs and embrace the creative and innovative ideas of young people in the field of scientific research and prepare the appropriate environment for the development of their projects to achieve sustainable development in accordance with the axes of the National Strategy for Science, Technology and Innovation 2030, and also the axes of the National Strategy for Higher Education and Scientific Research, in addition to the efforts of a specialized and distinguished team from the Technology Innovation Commercialization Office (TICO) and the Entrepreneurship Club (E-Club) in the city. It is worth noting that the winning research team from the city “Genestone” includes the principal researcher Dr. Ayat Mohamed El Maghraby, a researcher at the Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology Research Institute, and the work team (Professor Dr. Salah Mahmoud Abdel Rahman, Engineer Menallah Mahmoud El Sherif, Engineer Sylvia Marcos Boutros, Professor John Sami Fikry). The team also won an award presented by the Egyptian-Chinese University for a project that serves the local manufacturing of materials used in the field of biotechnology and providing scientific services related to this field.

Innovation and sustainable development (Science, Technology and Innovation Incentives Act)

Professor Dr. Mona Mahmoud Abdel Latif, Director of the City, hosted Mr. Yasser Abdel Fattah Salem, Chief Administrative Affairs at the Egyptian Petroleum Research Institute and former Director of the Public Relations and Media Department in the City, on Monday, July 15, 2024, to give a lecture under the title: Innovation and sustainable development in  Law No. 23 of 2018 (Science, Technology and Innovation Incentives Law) in the presence of Professor Dr. Mohamed Rashad Abdel Fattah, Deputy Director of the City for Scientific and Research Affairs, Professor Dr. Yasser Refaat, Deputy Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research (former), and His Excellency the Deans of Research Institutes, members of the research body, their assistants, and administrators in the City.Mr. Yasser Abdel Fattah gave a presentation on innovation and sustainable development in light of the Science, Technology and Innovation Incentives Law. The seventeen sustainable development goals were explained and that development must balance social, economic and environmental sustainability. The performance standards and indicators of the Scientific Research City were also presented. It is arranged according to the Semago classification according to the classification criteria in terms of research activity, innovation outcomes, and societal impact.Professor Dr. Mona Abdel Latif praised the lecture for being in line with the directions of the state and the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research in supporting the field of innovation, sustainable development, and entrepreneurship, as it contributes to research and development at all levels to achieve the best successful innovations, create new opportunities, and create different ideas to support the field of modern technology. Lecture: Presentation of modern techniques used to evaluate anti-inflammatory and anti-oxidant biomaterials In the city of scientific research and technological applications

Within the framework of strengthening international scientific cooperation between the City of Scientific Research and Technological Applications and international research and academic bodies, and in continuation of scientific cooperation between the City and the Slovak Academy of Sciences – Bratislavia – Slovakia, the City organized through the Research Institute for Advanced Technology and New Materials in cooperation with the Center for Experimental Medicine of the Slovak Academy Science lecture entitled:“REDOX PROPERTIES OF THIOL COMPOUNDS AND MN(III) PORPHYRINS. EXPERIMENTAL AND PRE-CLINICAL OBSERVATIONS”It was held on June 4, 2024 at the city’s headquarters in the new city of Burj Al Arab. This was attended by the deans and heads of research centers and institutes, the members of the city’s research staff, and Dr. Catherine Valkova, head of the Department of Bioorganic Chemistry for Pharmaceuticals at the Institute of Experimental Pharmacy and Toxicology, affiliated with the Slovak Academy of Sciences ( Lecturer) and Prof. Dr. Laclav Šurz, Professor at the Slovak Academy of Sciences (lecturer).Professor Dr. Mona Mahmoud Abdel Latif, Director of the City, confirmed that the lecture provides the opportunity to learn about the center’s research activities and the extent to which the City can benefit from these technologies in scientific partnerships with research groups specialized in pharmaceutical sciences, polymers, and research related to wound healing, surgical dressings, and research.
