Central Laboratory for Scientific Services and Environmental Assessment
Central Laboratory for Scientific Services and Environmental Assessment
Distinguished Services Offered by the Central Laboratory:
- Environmental consultations and studies to assess environmental impact, determine suitable treatment methods, and ensure wastewater quality compliance.
- Conducting chemical and microbial tests for drinking water, wastewater (domestic and industrial), and food products.
- Determining microbial contamination levels in raw materials and final products.
- Estimating microbial contamination in companies and workers and suggesting solutions to problems.
- Providing solutions to industrial pollution and drinking/wastewater issues and developing appropriate methods for analyzing new samples.
Main Laboratories:
1. Microbiology Laboratory
This laboratory performs the following analyses on drinking water, wastewater, food samples, and pharmaceutical products:
- Total bacterial count
- Fecal coliforms
- Total coliforms
- Fecal streptococci
- Yeasts and molds
- Salmonella
- Sterility tests
It also tracks causes and issues related to microbial contamination in final products.
2. Chemistry and Water Analysis Laboratory
This laboratory performs the following tests for drinking water, domestic and industrial wastewater:
- pH level
- Electrical conductivity (EC)
- Total dissolved salts
- Total hardness
- Total phosphates
- Sulfates
- Alkalinity
- Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD)
- Biological Oxygen Demand (BOD)
- Chloride
- Chlorine
- Silicates
- Nitrates
- Nitrites
- Ammonia
- Aluminum
- Oils and greases
- Sulfides
- Total nitrogen
- Phenols
It also performs food analyses such as:
- Fiber content
- Nitrogen content
- Oil percentage
3. Instrumentation and Measurement Laboratory
This lab includes advanced instruments that serve research and industry
Atomic Absorption Spectroscopy (AAS)
- Measures heavy metal content in samples like wastewater, soil, pharmaceuticals, and food.
- Detects trace elements down to parts per million (ppm).
Gas Chromatography (GC)
- Used for high-temperature volatile compounds such as alcohols, esters, phenols, fatty acids, hydrocarbons, and pesticides.
- Compares raw materials and products using standard references.
Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry (GC-MS)
It is used to separate and measure substances that can withstand high temperatures and are volatile without breaking down, such as alcohols, esters, phenols, fatty acids, hydrocarbons, aliphatic and aromatic compounds, and pesticides. It also performs comparisons of raw materials and industrial products to ensure their efficiency and quality, using standard and reference materials.
High-Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC)
- Separates and quantifies heat-sensitive substances such as sugars, vitamins, active pharmaceutical ingredients, pesticides, and hormones.
- Includes a fraction collector for post-analysis work.
Amino Acid Analyzer (AAA)
- Measures amino acid concentrations in food, feed, and pharmaceuticals.
