Professor Dr. Mona Mahmoud Abdel Latif, Director of the City of Scientific Research and Technological Applications, announced that the city participated in the twenty-eighth Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP28), held in the United Arab Emirates – Dubai from November 30 to December 12, 2023. This participation was commissioned by the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research to represent Egypt at the conference. Assistant Professor Dr. Amr Salah Morsy, Head of the Department of Livestock at the Arid lands Cultivation Research Institute in the city, participated as the chairman of the discussion session in the Egyptian Pavilion, titled: “Adapting Livestock Management to Changing Climates: Bridging the Gap” On December 10, Assistant Professor Dr. Amr Salah Morsy participated in the panel discussion with Professor Dr. Yosra Ahmed Soltan Abdel Rahman from the Department of Animal and Fish Production at Alexandria University, Assistant Professor Dr. Hany Mohamed Al-Ziyat from the Department of Animal Science and Veterinary Medicine at the College of Agriculture and Marine Sciences at Sultan Qaboos University in Oman, and Assistant Professor Dr. Amira Darwish, Head of the Food Technology Program at the Faculty of Industrial Technology and Energy at Borg El Arab Technological University. The session was attended by Dr. Yasmin Fouad, Minister of Environment, Dr. Hany Atif Nbahhan Sweilam, Minister of Water Resources and Irrigation, as well as a number of professors and stakeholders interested in climate change. Assistant Professor Dr. Amr Salah Morsy began the session with an introduction about Egypt’s role in climate change and the contribution of each sector, including the agriculture sector in general and the livestock sector in particular, to greenhouse gas emissions compared to global production. He also highlighted the role of universities and research centers in raising awareness about the importance of the climate change issue and the methods used by these institutions to measure greenhouse gas emissions, both in laboratories and field studies, especially in developing countries that lack advanced technology. The impact of these climate changes on the quality of animal products such as milk and meat was discussed, as well as how to mitigate these effects through modern technology. Assistant Professor Dr. Amr Salah Morsy discussed with the participants in the session the most important modern strategies for mitigating the effects of climate change and the key methods for adaptation to the current situation. At the end of the session, several important recommendations were reached, including the need to maintain the performance of livestock through adaptation and the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions according to current conditions and available resources, at different levels, whether at the level of the animal itself or its feed, or at the level of the surrounding environment.
